Chapter Fourteen

Charlie's first real weekend on the beach since

his accident consisted of a lot of short stints on the

board and in the water, folowed by long breaks so his

body could recover from the shock and the strain of

what it was being asked to do. The absence of Charlie's

right arm meant his body required strength from his left

arm and his legs he'd never had to rely on before, and

after even half an hour in the reasonably calm ocean,

Charlie would be lying on the sand panting, aching al

over. He wasn't exactly in shape. Even if he'd had two

arms, he hadn't done much to keep fit during the last six

months. Unless you counted sex with a superhero.

Charlie wasn't able to get Ness surfing like a

pro in one weekend or even one month, but thanks to

Ness's complete lack of talent for surfing, he was able

to disguise his own attempts to adapt his old skils to his

new body as a series of coaching sessions for his big

unco cop. They spent at least one afternoon a week at

the beach together for the express purpose of getting

them both into good surfing shape. They started out on

the sand, Charlie showing Ness how to balance on the

board. That was different for him now, his centre of

balance was skewed, but he ducked and weaved,

showing Ness how it was done. Next they rode their

boards in the shalows, skirting along the sand and into

the water then started swimming further out to ride the

smal waves.

Being in the surf again was difficult for Charlie.

The further out they went, and the longer they stayed

out, the more swimming and paddling that was required,

the more difficult it was. But they took a lot of breaks;

water breaks and massages and sometimes naps in the

sand.

Ness didn't baby him or fret over him, but he

was vigilant. Charlie hardly ever had to admit to needing

a break. Ness always beat him to it, always claiming he

was the one who needed to rest. He was being a little

presumptuous, but Charlie found Ness's care and

consideration endearing. Ness was actualy reading him

pretty wel, and man, it was sweet of him to keep

stepping in like that. Charlie's studly rescue cop was a

big softie.

They went from swimming and paddling and

balancing to standing, which was hardest of al for

Charlie. He couldn't use both arms when he pushed

himself up off the board to stand so he had to centre his

left, and then positioning himself on the board and

balancing standing in decent sized waves was tricky. He

was constantly trying to feel out the whole balance

thing.

Then as Ness began to catch on, Charlie

started faling behind. He kept ditching right into the

ocean, unable to even get to his feet on the board a lot

of the time, and then on the occasions he managed to

upright himself he only managed to stay on his feet on

the board for a few seconds before he lost his balance.

And the waves didn't care if he only had one arm, they

plunged him under the water and flung him around like

anybody else.

One Sunday afternoon, after lunch at Linda's,

when they
